Adopt an Organic Field
Adopt an Organic Field
Sawyer Park in Kensington, New Hampshire is a hidden gem in a small rural community in the NH seacoast. The 8.5 acre park includes two baseball fields, one softball field, one soccer field, with common turf areas that include a playground, pavilion and concession stand. The park has become a central location for town sports and events. Many people from surrounding towns and sports teams use the park because it is one of the most beautiful in New Hampshire.
In any large undertaking, a challenge or two is expected. During construction, native soils lacking in the ability to sustain turf were compacted making turf care at the new Sawyer Park a challenge that couldn’t be overlooked.
To remedy the problem and make this an opportunity to “go green”, Mike Motherway started the Adopt an Organic Field Program. This program relies on a collaborative effort between the community, experts in the field of organic turf care, and companies willing to partner in this effort to build an educational model demonstrating that turf care can be handled without the use of chemicals or synthetic fertilizers.
The project kick-off is on Earth Day, April 22, 2010.
